SRINAGAR: Two earthquakes were reported in Ladakh and Chenab Valley regions within 10 minutes before midnight. Panic spread but there were no losses. This brings the number of earthquakes to nine, the last one in Ramban during the day.
On Saturday evening, the earth shook as an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck Ladakh, followed by another 4.4 magnitude earthquake hitting the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, just ten minutes later. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that the earthquake in Ladakh occurred at 9:44 PM, while the earthquake in Doda occurred at 9:55 PM. These quakes triggered a sense of unease and concern among residents in the affected areas.
The NCS shared the details of the earthquakes via their official Twitter handle. According to their tweet, the earthquake in Doda was of magnitude 4.4 and occurred on June 17, 2023, at 9:55:39 PM IST. The coordinates for the epicentre were reported as latitude 33.04 and longitude 75.70, with a depth of 18 kilometres.
Similarly, the earthquake in Ladakh was recorded with a magnitude of 4.5 and took place on June 17, 2023, at 9:44:29 PM IST. The coordinates for its epicentre were stated as latitude 35.74 and longitude 79.84, with a depth of 10 kilometres. The location was specified as 271 kilometres northeast of Leh in Ladakh.
As these tremors rippled through the region, their impact was felt even in Delhi, where residents experienced the ground shaking.
The authorities and emergency response teams have been closely monitoring the situation, ensuring that adequate measures are in place to address any potential risks.
