SRINAGAR: Reacting to ongoing India vs Bharat debate, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Vice President Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that the union government will have to change the constitution of India if they intend to rename the country.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Omar Abdullah said that the move to rename the country would require a change in the Constitution, and nobody would support the cause. “It is not so easy to change the name of the country. You will have to change the Constitution of the country for this. If you have the guts, then do it, we will see who supports you,” Omar Abdullah said.
Abdullah’s statement has come in response to Rashtrapati Bhawan sending out invites for a G20 dinner on September 9 in the name of the ‘President of Bharat’ instead of the ‘President of India.’
National Conference (NC) patriarch Farooq Abdullah commenting on the same said, “It is mentioned in the Indian constitution that Bharat and India are one and urged the media to avoid creating a controversy.”
Meanwhile, the administration has issued a fresh notification for the general elections of LAHDC, fixing October 4th as the polling date. The voting for 26 seats, which was earlier scheduled on September 10, will now take place on October 04.
Reacting on the same, Omar said, “It is disappointing that the party had to fight for its rights within the political landscape. However, we are looking forward to getting the support of the people of the Kargil in the upcoming elections.”
