SRINAGAR: Nawab John Dar, a dedicated postdoctoral scientist affiliated with the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, has been chosen to be featured in the Marquis Who’s Who in America list. The database, operational since 1899, encompasses over 1.6 million biographies from diverse fields.
Driven by a deep-seated passion for unravelling the complexities of the human brain, Dar has dedicated his efforts to advancing the understanding of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. Following his graduation from the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in India, Dar embarked on a research journey with a focus on exploring the neuroprotective potential of specific withanolides, a group of bioactive compounds.
In May 2022, Dar joined the Salk Institute, where he became part of a research group led by Professor Pamela Maher. Together, their collaborative efforts centred around investigating the role of oxytosis (cell death resulting from the depletion of a specific amino acid) and ferroptosis (cell death induced by certain anti-cancer drugs) in Alzheimer’s disease. Their ultimate objective entails identifying potential targets for effective therapeutic interventions against this devastating condition.
Expressing his gratitude for his inclusion is the respected database, Dar recounted receiving an email from Marquis Who’s Who, expressing their interest in interviewing him. He was informed that the interview did not guarantee inclusion but willingly shared comprehensive details about his scientific work during the 50-minute conversation. Dar eagerly engaged in discussions primarily focused on his research, a subject he could effortlessly discuss at length. Eventually, he received the gratifying news of his inclusion in the list.
“I’m genuinely pleased with the recognition,” Dar told LajollaLight. “It holds particular significance as it extends beyond the realm of science. It means a lot to me. I appreciate their invitation because it’s not something I would actively pursue on my own.”
Nawab is basically from Brazlu in Kulgam and has served UT Health San Antonio for many years before joining the California-based university.
