SRINAGAR: In a significant move, the office of J&K’s Chief Electoral Office has decided to digitise electoral rolls dating back to 1951, when elections were held for J&K’s constituent assembly.
Documents reveal that the Chief Electoral Office (CEO) has initiated the process of digitising electoral rolls.
To commence the process, the CEO’s office has issued bids to hire companies for the services of scanning, digitisation, and transliteration of the old electoral rolls of J&K.
According to the documents, the electoral rolls from 1951, 1957, 1971, 1975, 1988, along with supplements up to 2001, 2008, and 2014, will undergo digitisation.
“The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, aims to digitize these records of immense importance through scanning and meta-tagging. Subsequently, the digitised versions will be stored and made readily accessible in the public domain,” the documents state.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s office is responsible for the preparation and management of electoral rolls in J&K. The initial electoral roll in Jammu & Kashmir was published in 1951 when elections were conducted to establish the constitution of J&K. The first Assembly election in J&K took place in 1957 under its own constitution. (KNO)
